This game is to be used as main activity in English classroom for young children

Finger Painting 1: Game for Main Activity in English Classroom for Young Learners

Age group:
• Age 3-4

Type:
• Main activity game

Objective:
• To develop children’s ability to count 1 – 5

Materials:
• Poster paint or food dye
• Thick paper

Steps:
• Ask the children to make their finger prints and toe prints.
• While printing, encourage them to count (one, two, three, four, five)
• At the end of the activity, ask them to count all prints that they have made (teacher’s prompt is needed since the counting could be more than 5).

This games is to be used as warming up activity in English classroom

Age group:
Age 4-6

Type:
Warming up game

Objective:
To develop children’s ability to identify meaning

Material:
Flashcards “feelings”

Steps:
1. Ask the children to sit down in a circle.
2. Hold the feeling flashcards and determine a movement for each feeling. Adjust the difficulty according to children’s ability. Happy – jump!
Sad – sit down!
Shy – cover your face!
Angry – run to the door!
Afraid – close your eyes!
Surprise – open your mouth!
Hungry – Rub your stomach!
Thirsty – Show me your tongue!
Ok – smile!
Sleepy – sleep!
Tired – lay down!
Cold – fold your hands!
Hot – fan yourself!


3. Afterwards, ask a child to take one flashcard. Encourage him to make a movement as determined earlier and shout the word.
4. Do it until each child get their turns

Mirror Mirror: Main Activity in English Classroom for Young Learners

Mirror mirror
This games may be used as main activity in English classroom for young learners. It is suitable for introducing kinds of feeling-related personal expressions.

Age group:
Age 3-5

Objectives:
To introduce kind of expressions
To develop children’s intrapersonal and interpersonal ability

Material:
Big mirror

Steps:
  1. If it is possible, prepare a big mirror, so that some children can see their expressions altogether and compare. 
  2. Then, ask them to make certain expressions (based on the vocabularies that are being learned). 
Examples:
Make a happy face!
Make a sad face!
Make a very happy face!
Make a shy face!


You should show them the expression while giving the instruction. After being rehearsed several times, only give them instruction without action.

Watch Me! Warming Up Games for English Classroom

  • Age 3-5
  • Warming up game
  • To develop children’s ability to identify meaning

Procedures:
  1. Ask the children to sit down in a circle. 
  2. Demonstrate an expression to them.  
  3. Ask a child who sits next to you to imitate. 
  4. Then, that child show her facial expression to the next child. 
  5. And so on until all children make the same expression. 
  6. Replay the game with different expressions. You can ask one of the children to be the first one

This game is to be used in English classroom setting.

Feeling line up: Main Activity Game in English Classroom for Young Learners


  • Age 3-5 
  • Main activity game
  • To develop children’s ability to identify meaning 


Materials:
“Feelings” flashcards (for older children, vary the flashcards with more “feelings”)

Procedures:

  • Give each child one flashcard.
  • Ask them to make a line. 
  • The child who stands up at the front line ask her friend who stands up behind her, “How are you?” The next child answers based on the flashcard he holds. 
  • That child then ask his friend who stands up behind him, “How are you?” That next child on the third row answers based on the flashcard he holds.  
  • And so on. Up to the last child who stands up at the end of the line. That last child asks the first child with the same question.

Clap Three Times: Closing Activity Game in English Classroom for Young Learners

  • Age 2-4 
  • Closing time game
  • To develop children’s concept of numeracy

Procedures:
  • Ask the children to stand up/sit down in a circle. 
  • Ask them to clap their hands (Clap your hands!).
  • Afterwards, ask them to clap their hands while counting. Ask them to follow you. For instance: Clap your hands once!, Clap your hands twice! Clap your hands three times and so on. 
  • Do it several times.
  • Once they get the rhythm accelerate the calpping tempo. Have fun!
